Musk's tunneling venture made his first major Bastrop-area investment in July 2021, establishing on roughly 73 acres about ten minutes outside the city. Reporting puts current employment near 200 people. The company has also floated building pedestrian tunnels beneath the Bastrop area — discussed publicly in fall 2025, not yet built.
SpaceX opened a Starlink manufacturing facility in 2023 that builds the ground-based receiver kits for its satellite-internet service, about 45 minutes from Austin. In March 2025 the state awarded a $17.3 million Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund grant to help expand it.
The company formerly known as Twitter is part of the growing Musk corporate compound in the Bastrop area, alongside the Boring Company HQ and the Starlink plant — the cluster local reporting calls the heart of Musk's business empire.
Together the sites form a single, expanding corporate compound — Boring Company, X, and Starlink on adjacent Bastrop-area land, with Tesla's Gigafactory about 30 miles west in Travis County anchoring the wider Central Texas Musk map.
In March 2025, Governor Greg Abbott's office announced a Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund grant of $17.3 million to SpaceX to expand the Bastrop-area Starlink manufacturing site. The state's framing is jobs and capital investment; the company's is production capacity for Starlink kits.
Per the announcement and follow-on reporting, the expansion is expected to add more than one million square feet over roughly three years, create about 400 jobs, and represent more than $280 million in capital investment. By September 2025, expansion activity was drawing public reaction from Bastrop residents.
